1. As the founding fathers created a new government following the American Revolution, the 13 colonies became known as "states". Based on what we discussed in class today why were they now called states and not colonies or 13 Nations or 13 Nation States?

2. James Madison wanted to prevent "factions" or special interest groups as stated on page 15. Do you believe that special interest groups would hinder the development of the United States and would the present day "Tea Party" be considered a faction in your opinion? why?

  1. 1. They are now called states and not colonies or 13 Nations or 13 Nation States because changes were taking place in the colonies. New rules were forming, such as happiness and safety to the people . In each state they had their own government, own territory ,and also their own laws.

    2. In my belief, the "Special Interest Group" would would hinder the development of the United States and would be the present of the "Tea Party" a faction, because it would make the government more involved, and would not let the people speak their freedom.

  2. 1.There are a few reasons why they are now called states not colonies. So many things were changing. There was a government in every state, and new laws and rules were made up in the states. Every state hadsomething different.

    2. I believe that the special interest groups would hinder the development because the government plays a role. The present day " Tea Party" would be a faction because it will do many things for the government.

  3. 1) They were now called states and not nation states because of the fact each state had their own laws and beliefs. To be a nation state the state has to follow the same laws, speak the same language, and have the same belief as everyone else in the country.

    2) Yes I believe factions would hinder the development of the United States, because there would be a bunch of groups with different opinions arguing over each other and that would slow the development down. In my opinion the present day "tea party" would be considered a faction because it is a bunch of people with the same interest on taxes and health insurance.

  4. 1) When the founding fathers first created a new government they were called colonies but then quickly changed to states for various reasons. These states were becoming populated, many different religions, cultures were developing and many languages. Therefore each state had new laws and boundaries.

    2) I do believe that factions or special interest groups would hinder the development of the United States. People would not be working together as a whole and moving forward and these groups would form many different opinions. Yes, I would consider the present day tea party a faction because they could be overbearing and not work together as a state.

  5. 1)They are now called states and not nations or colonies because they all were separate pieces of land with different laws and regulations. Each state needed the boundaries to also divide the population.

2)I dont think that factions or special interest groups hinder the development of the United States because after all we are all different inviduals and have our own views to be heard so there should be different vantage points of what we want government to be like in the United States. I do think the present day tea party is a faction because it is a party within a party and it is located inside the republican party.

  6. 1. the 13 colonies are now referred to as states due to the fact that so many things had changed since back then. States had different laws from one another, they also had different beliefs when it came to religion. in order for a nation state to be present that would mean that each state would have to abide by the same rules as well as have the same beliefs. Language and customs would also have to be similar.

    2. i feel that the special interest groups would hinder the development of the united states inn ways such as, there would be a bunch of debates between people and their different opinions. By arguing, no problems would be fixed and this would only cause more confusion which would slow down the development of the United States. The tea party would be considered a fraction because it was an event that took place between many people with similar interests which was to help benefit themselves and try and stop unnecessary rules.

  7. 1. The thirteen colonies were now called states and not nation states because many changes were taking place in the colonies. These states changed by becoming populated and developing different religions, cultures and languages. Each state had their own government, laws and beliefs.

    2. In my opinion, I believe that special interest groups would hinder the development of the United States and would be the present of the "Tea Party", a faction. Everyone has freedom of speech. If no one has a say in the government, then the government would fall apart. There would be a bunch of groups with different opinions and people would be arguing over eachother. This will slow down the development of the government.

  8. 1. The 13 colonies became 13 states because they were each apart of the nation. They each had slightly different laws. They weren't 13 nations because they were formed under one constitution with a common belief and governed by one central government.

2.i believe special interest groups would hinder the development of the united states. As it is republicans and democrats are constantly conflicting on their views and interpretations of the constitution, these groups would add "fuel to the fire" causing more conflicts among themselves. I do believe that the "tea party" is a faction because they are a group of people with similar ideas that try to push their ideas onto the rest of their political party.

  9. 1. They were named states because all the different areas had their own territory, population and government. They also had very different cultures and beliefs. These states were settled by very different people with different motives.

    2. I don't think that special interest groups would really affect the development of the United States. I believe everyone has the right to their own opinion and with that people with similar opinions would stick together. I think that the "Tea Party" is a faction because it is a small group inside the Republican Party.

  10. 1) After the newly American government was formed, the colonists now had freedom from England; but more importantly freedom to start their new nation. Now that the people of America were all living under one government on what was now rightfully their territory, they became a nation rather than thirteen colonies; Thus turning the colonies into states. These states were states and not separate nations because each state lived under the same federal government.

    2) In the time of the newly forming American government, special interest groups would only harm the push towards a strong central government where all men are equal. If "factions" united and stood in the way to get what they want, the government would seem weak and unfair. In my opinion the Tea Party is not a faction, because their purpose is for the United States government to strictly follow the Constitution, as the government sometimes fails to do. If the Tea Party were an organization to (for example) ban tea in the United States, it would much more be considered a faction in my opinion.

  11. 1. the 13 colonies became known as states because states formed governments with their own laws. Nations followed with the same language, cultures and religions. States are made up of different religons, languages, etc.

    2. Special interest groups would hinder the development of the United States because of their own beliefs and their own opinion on a form of government. The present day " Tea Party" would be considered a faction because the tea party people are traditioal thinkers and are united by common interests and passions

  12. 1. As the founding fathers created a new government following the American Revolution, the 13 colonies became known as "states" and not colonies because the colonies were developing new rules and laws to protect their nation. They decided to change trheir name because they felt they were becoming together as one.

    2. I do think that the special interest groups would ruin the developement of the United States because the democrats and the republicans were always getting into feuds and disagreements on topics. They all had strong opinions on different things, and would often clash.

  13. 1. The 13 colonies were called the 13 states because new laws were created, new technologies and diverse religions were born. Prior to this the colonies were all under one rule and had little differences.

    2. I think special interest groups helps the developmen of the united stats because with special interest groups more ideas, i think will be brought to the table. The present day "tea party" in my opinion is concerded a special intrest group because it is composed of many perople with different views or everything else but as a group they shair the same ideas

  14. 1.The 13 colonies became know as states becuse they had different views. For example, laws and beliefs. They were named states because all the different areas had their own territory, population and government.

2.I believe that factions would hinder the development of the United States, because there would be many of the groups with different views. That would lead to arguing over each other and that would slow the development down. i believe that today "tea party" would be considered a faction because it is many people with the same interest on taxes.

  15. 1:Colonies mean they were under control of another countries and nations. They also were not under control and were making own laws.

2.I do believe that factions or special interest groups would hinder the development of the United States because people wouldn't work together as a family and move on. Presemt day tea party isnt to me to be believed as a special intrest group because of my views.

  16. 1. They now called states and not colonies or 13 Nations or 13 Nation States because they have their own laws and regulations. A nation follows all the same rules but a state has its own rules that the rest of the nation does not have to follow.

    2. I believe that special interest groups would hinder the development of the United States. The present day "Tea Party" would be considered a faction because there would just be more problems when the "Tea Party" gives ideas or opinions on something. They would be fighting with Democrats constantly and it would just cause more confusion and chaos in the government.

  17. 1) The 13 colonies because known as states because each colony formed its own government. The nation broke up into many different states, and each state had its own set of laws, religions, and languages.

    2) I believe that factions or special interest groups would hinder the development of the United States. The country wouldn't be working together as one and moving forward. There would be multiple debates between people with different opinions. I believe the "tea party" is a faction because it is people who have similar ideas and try to stretch their ideas onto the rest of the Republican party .

  18. 1. Based on what we discussed today in class the 13 colonies or the 13 nation states are not referred to that anymore each state is very different from one another. They have different governments and laws. Some states have a larger population than others. And also some states can be mostly blacks, whites or even diverse
    2. Yes I believe that the special interest group would hinder the development of the united states because when you have to much of the same thing it gets boring and when you have different types of groups I think it makes things a bit more interesting. Yes I believe that the present tea party is a special group because it's usually the high social class

  19. 1. Based on what we dicussed in class the 13 colonies are now cosidered states because each one of the colonies adopted their own form of government. These states developed their own set of laws, government, lifestyles, and traditions.

    2. Special interest groups would hinder the development of the united states because if there's not enough difference nothing changes and everything seems to stay the same. I believe that the modern day "Tea Party" is considered a "faction" according to James Maddison because the tea party is only looking out for only one group of people and those people are the upper class.

  20. 1) The 13 colonies are considered states are because they have their own population, territory, sovereignty, government, senators and politicians. Thus making the 13 colonies states. Therefor the 13 colonies are states and not nation states.

    2) In my opinion the special interest groups would hinder the development of the United States of Amercia. I believe it would hinder the development because if their wasnt another party then the people who are against them would have no option besides following the government.

  21. 1. They are now called states and not Nation states or any other of those names because they are a part of the Nation, but now have the ability to create new laws and customs soley for that one state. Nation states do not have this ability they must all have the same custums, race, laws, etc.

    2. Special Interest groups would himder the development of the United States because with them the people wouldn't have a choice of what they would like to follow it would only be one group and they would have no choice put to follow and abide by them

    ReplyDelete
  22. 1 They are now called states instead of colonies because when they declared their independence from England and they each formed their own set of laws specific to each of their states.

    2. I think special interest groups hinder the development of the united states a little because these groups are biased so their judgement could be clouded. The "Tea Party" is I think both a faction and not a faction at the same time because the "Tea Party" are a certain group of republicans that have their own ideas.

  23. 1. After declaring freedom the colonies each established their own form of government. This different culture, tradition, and government was the reason they were called states.

    2. Special interest groups would hinder the development of the U.S. by slowing down the U.S. from moving forward because of all the conflict caused by the group. i believe the Tea Party is a faction because they are one with more or less the same interests and wants.

  24. 1-The 13 colonies were now known as states because they have four major features which are-population, territory, they are soverign and they have their own gov't. Colonies are governed by the countries who discovered them, they take orders not from their people , but from a foreign nation for the most part.
2-I believe that special interest groups are just what they a say thery are they look out for their interest-they do not look at whats best for the entire group-but they focus on what their agenda is and stick to those points. Special interest groups often enfrage on the rights of others. The tea party would be called a special interest group, they believe in their own values and they insist on what they have to say is correct and they will go to any extreme to get their point of view across.
